New Course! Pirkei Avot: The Big Picture
.png)
Joe Rosenstein is giving a new zoom course on Pirkei Avot between Simchat Torah and Thanksgiving, on six consecutive Sundays from 5:30 to 7:00pm (Eastern time), starting on October 19.
The title of the course is "Pirkei Avot: The Big Picture," and it will focus on the themes of Pirkei Avot rather than the individual mishnayot.
Siyyum on Harayot
September 15th, 2025
Join us on Monday, September 15, at 8:00 PM, as we celebrate our Siyyum on having completed studying Horayot. If you are unfamiliar with this tractate of the Talmud (and even if you are entirely new to Talmud), this is your opportunity to get a taste of what the rabbis had to say about . . .
But wait! I know what you're thinking: Didn't we just have a Siyyyum?!
Yes, we did. Horayot is what the rabbis might call a teeny weenie tractate. It consists of only thirteen folios and ostensibly deals with how and when one must atone for inadvertent transgressions, perhaps occasioned by following erroneous rulings by judges or priests.
That said, this Siyyum will celebrate more than the completion of a teeny weenie tractate. We are also celebrating the completion of the order of Nezikin, which contains Bava Kamma, Bava Metzia, Bava Batra, Sanhedrin, Makkot, Shevuot, Eduyyot, Avoda Zara and, of course, Horayot--681 folios. We began reading this order on November 14, 2023; we complete it on Monday, September 15.
This is a ripped-from-the-headlines order covering such topics as civil law, the judiciary, criminal procedure, oaths, testimonies, idolatry, ethics, and the implications of erroneous rulings. Our Talmud chocham (using the term loosely) have been tasked with picking a favorite theme and drashing a singular example of how the rabbis resolved a question central to that theme.
Join in the conversation and make up your own minds as to whether the Sages are right or why they're wrong. No previous experience with Talmud required to join a great conversation!
Siyyum on Avoda Zara
September 2nd, 2025
Join us on Tuesday, September 2, as we celebrate our Siyyum on having completed studying Avoda Zara. If you are unfamiliar with this tractate of the Talmud (and even if you are entirely new to Talmud), this is your opportunity to get a taste of what the rabbis had to say about idol worship in the days when it proliferated, as well as our reflections on whether it persists in our time.

Translators of this tractate suggest that the rules around contact with idol worshippers and the idols themselves have been nullified, reasoning that "negative remarks in this tractate about the morals of idol worshippers were descriptive of the pagans whose depraved behavior the Sages observed, and should not be construed as pertaining to any of the cultured societies in which we reside nowadays." Join in the conversation and make up your own minds as to whether they're right or why they're wrong. No previous experience with Talmud required to join a great conversation!
