Call for Poretsky Artists in Residence Proposals (2012)
NHC 2012 Summer Institute Poretsky Artist-in-Residence Program
About the Poretsky Artists in Residence Program
The NHC community is a vibrant and diverse group of people dedicated to Jewish living and learning, community building and tikkun olam (repairing the world). Egalitarianism and a willingness to learn are our fundamental principles. Because we believe that every teacher is a student and every student is a teacher, our teachers also take classes, join in community-wide events, share Shabbat, and enjoy all that the Institute has to offer.
Two Artists in Residence join the faculty of each NHC Summer Institute (taking place August 6th through the 12th, 2012) funded by a grant from the Rita Poretsky Foundation. The Artist-in-Residence grant is ideal for trying out a new project or thematic idea in a supportive community. Previous Artists-in-Residence have included award-winning artists Liz Lerman, Aviva Chernick, Ramon Tasat, Peter Pitzele, Arthur Strimling, Merle Feld, Alicia Ostriker, Tracey Erin Smith, Greg Wall, and a cadre of other talented artists working in diverse fields of the arts world. Last year's artists, musician Joey Weisenberg and actor/writer Jordan Herskowitz taught great classes and had a wonderful time themselves.
Each Artist-in-Residence teaches one course of four sessions( each of which is either 90 or 150 minutes) . Each Artist in Residence performs, exhibits or demonstrates her or his work in one community-wide evening program. Each artist is also asked to develop a program for the community's teenagers or children's program where appropriate. Using their art form, artists explore a theme that relates to ritual, text, history, or some other aspect of Jewish life. The Artist-in-Residence grant is ideal for exploring a new project or thematic idea in a supportive community that itself includes a number of talented artists.
One of the NHC's foundational principles is that every teacher is also a student, and every student is also a teacher. Therefore, we are particularly searching for artist-teachers who can help others become art-makers for the week, and who will participate actively as both teachers and learners in the Institute community that forms each summer. As a Poretsky Artist-in-Residence, you will also have the opportunity to take a class yourself, join the community-wide events, choose from one of several daily minyanim (prayer groups) and a plethora of workshops, and enjoy all the recreational activities that the Institute has to offer. The Poretsky Foundation grant underwrites each Artist in Residence's full participation in the Institute and provides a $1,200 stipend upon conclusion of the Institute. The Poretsky grant only covers $1200 in stipend and a full scholarship per artist slot. if you apply with a co-artist, and your proposal is accepted, the committee will be in touch with you and your co-artist to discuss further arrangements.
The theme for this year’s Institute is V'samtem et d'varai eileh al l'vavchem -- And You Shall Set These Words of Mine Upon Your Heart. (Deut. 11:18). This theme could inspire studies of words of or from the heart, what it means to set someone else’s words upon one’s heart, or any other thought provoking takes on the theme. While we invite proposals for courses that speak to or draw upon the theme, we welcome proposals for all topics relevant to our community. Every proposal receives full consideration.
Responsibilities
- Teaching a group of approximately 20 students (potentially ranging in age from 13-100) for four 90 minute sessions (or alternatively four 150 min "extended-format" sessions)
- Facilitating a community-wide evening activity. We would like the whole Institute community to have an opportunity to learn from you during the week. While this activity may be a performance of some sort (either by you or your class), this is a participatory community and we ask that there be a significant interactive component of the program.
- Participating in the children's camp. We make every effort to include our youngest members in the entire community. Therefore, we will ask you to spend a session in our children's program, which serves those age six months to twelve years.
Application
Applications are due no later than Sunday, November 13th, 2011 (a tight schedule will not allow us to consider late submissions).
Please download the Artist-in-Residence application form. Rename the file to include your last name and first initial, i.e. NHC2012AIRProposal_LEVIN_Y.docx if your name is Yael Levin). Click the shaded areas to fill out the form. Email your completed form to poretskyair@havurah.org with Artist in Residence in the subject line.
You may also submit CV, samples of your art, audio or video files, or other additions to your application by attaching them to your email message along with the application file above. The application has a place where you can include links to resources (audio, video, etc) online, and we generally prefer that rather than large attachments. We strongly prefer electronic files over paper ones.
We (a human, not an automated message) will send you a confirmation message when we receive your form. So give us a day. If you don't hear from us with in a day or two, please email us as a reminder. If you still don't hear from us, contact the NHC office.
Proposals are due by Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 11:59 P.M. EST. This deadline is firm and will not be extended. Proposals received after this date will not be considered.
If you don’t have Internet access, request a paper form from the NHC office, and return or fax it with ample time so the office staff can enter it online for you.
Course Committee Consideration
If you would like your course proposal to be considered by the Course Committee independently, in the event that you do not receive the Poretsky Aritst In Residence position, please indicate this on your application. The Course Committee will review your application independently of the Artist in Residence committee, along with other course proposals. Institute teachers attend the Institute for free, and this is another opportunity to share your art and creativity with the community. Asking for simultaneous consideration by the Course Committee does not impact your Artist-in-Residence application in any way.
